3am. There was a late night call to the WSM house. Ali’s mobile buzzed on the bedside cabinet. Waking both her and Elijah. He had fallen asleep in her bed again. Like the night before… and the night before that.

“Who is ringing at this time at night” Elijah complained rubbing his eyes as the light of the bedside lamp made him squint.

Ali held up her hand to him as if to say, 1 minute as she held her mobile to her ear. There was a few, Mm's and yes’s that came from her mouth. And then Yes we can have that ready, Okay see you when you get here” she turned around with a concerned look on her face, Hanging up the phone.

“Who was that ?” Elijah questioned, now getting up from the queen sized bed.

Ali walked over to the closet, opening the door. “It was the Julie from the SSPCA, They have uncovered an Illegal Auction House with about 200 horses. They don’t have space for them all, so they have asked if we could house them for a few weeks until the court case, or the horses are surrendered.”

“Well by the sound of it you have said yes, Ali we don’t have space for them all, even if we made temporary stables” He shook his head.

Ali smiled “ Not all 200, only about 30. The rest will be distributed to other stables and rescue houses until they can be rehomed.” She began raking through the closet “come on, get ready. We got work to do” Elijah groaned and wandered on through to his room.

5 minutes later and they both emerged from thier rooms and came down stairs and began making there way to the yard. “We need to get the tractor and ALL the panels, and need to get them in the indoor”

Elijah went and fetched the tractor and trailer, while Ali opened up storage and began pulling out the lightweight metal panel fencing. Elijah made his way around and they began loading as many as they could, as fast as they could. They had less than 2 hours to set this all up, and have it ready. One by one they made temporary stalls. Fitting about 8 along the back wall and another 8 along the front window. And finally placing 14 in the middle. 7 back to back.

Before long Ali had a buzz at her phone. She answered and put it on loudspeaker “Hey, we are at the gate, Are you guys ready with everything.” The female voice spoke from the phone.
“Almost, did you get everything like the buckets and the head collars” Ali replied back, placing one hand into her jacket.
“Yeah, I have Adam trailing behind with everything” The voice replied.
Ali snickered and smirked a bit “Alright,Ill be along to open the gate, just gave me a sec.” She hung up the phone and looked over to Elijah, who was finishing up the last stall.
“Hey could you do one last thing.” She looked sheepishly at El.
In return he looked back at her with a tired look and a sigh. “Sure” He said almost sarcastically.
Ali looked at him pitifully. “Could you make a run. Julie wants to have them vet checked and charted one by one, before they are stalled. It will allow them to have blood taken and have their wounds looked at.” She walked on over the main opening for the indoor. “Basically, put fences along here and leave the center open and put fences either side, with a gate at each end.”

Elijah put his hand up. “I know how to make a run. Now hurry and get the gate open”

Ali jogged off. Hopping on the quad and hurried along to the main gate. She opened the massive black iron gates allowing the two livestock lorries, a truck and a car through. She signalled the lorries to follow her to where they can take them. Having them park up across from the paddock. Elijah had thankfully just finished the holding area and run. Julie hopped out one of the lorries to great Ali. Both going inside so see if everything was in order. A few SSPCA workers followed in to help set up the run with medical supplies, charts, headcollars and number tags. Even one with a set of scales big enough for a horse to go on, that would be placed on the ground in the run. Where others came in with buckets, hay nets, and troughs. Before long there was about 15 people bustling inside and outside the indoor paddock and the first lorry was backed up into the pen. Tonight would be a long night.

They began unloading the lorry of horses, 2 horse came out at a time. Some didn’t even want to leave the confined space. Eventually the first 15 were unloaded and in the holding pen ready to be assessed. The second lorry was then backed up, doing the same as the last. The pen became more crowded as each horse came into it. Elijah gave a quick look over them all. Some looked reasonable. Well fed and recently groomed, whereas others, The majority were about to drop from starvation, covered in blood and dirt. He made his way back up to the run to help the vet. One by one horses were pushed into the run. They had their body weight taken, blood samples, even their teeth checked. Hoof quality and any other injuries were noted.
All horses were given a head collar and a number. Each number coinciding with the number on their chart. Some were a struggle to get a headcollar on. Throwing their head or trying to back up once they were in the run. Almost like they had very little human handling. A few had to be sedated as they classed as an endangerment to staff.

They finally got through all 32 horses, but a few seemed they might not make it through the day. Ali checked each stall to make sure they had food and water. It made her sad to see horses in such stait. She stopped at one of the stalls. A grey mare and her 2 month old black filly. Elijah, stepped up next to her.
“How can anyone do this, to something so innocent.” She piped up.
Elijah looked at her and somewhat sighed again. “Monsters” He placed his arm around her shoulder. “Come on, I don’t know about you but I’m extremely tired”
Ali shook her head “Well I am tired but now we have to deal with our own horses” She took out her phone and looked at the time “7am, everyone will be looking for there breakfast and to get out into the field, then after that we need to muck out all the stables, The quicker we do that the quicker we can go to bed.” She smirked at him “Also, if your gonna complain about late night phone calls waking you up, maybe go to sleep in your own bed” she giggled.
